The Uncomfortable Truth About Comfort

TSLwebsiteprofilephoto.JPG

Meet Liddy

Hi, I'm Liddy Davis, a doctorate-prepared Registered Nurse with over 30 years of experience—and a passion for helping nurses and healthcare professionals rediscover their purpose.
About 25 years ago, I found my voice—but not by choice. I was thrown out of my comfort zone and faced with a “sink or swim” moment that changed everything. That experience taught me the power of pushing past fear, discomfort, and the self-doubt that tells us, “That dream isn’t for you.” I realized that every nurse has the potential to rise—to lead, influence, encourage, and mentor others.

That pivotal moment became the spark behind my passion: speaking to nurses, nursing students, and healthcare professionals about overcoming limiting beliefs and breaking through barriers to reach the career—and life—they truly want.

When I’m not speaking, you can find me at the Pilates studio, trying (and often failing!) to keep my backyard plants alive, or posted up at Starbucks with a Tony Robbins or John Maxwell book in hand.

I’d love to be a part of your next event. Let’s inspire your audience to chase big goals—and walk away ready to take the next bold step.

Liddy's Talks

What Happened to the Dream?

Smiling Nurse in Scrubs

When we first became nurses, we were filled with passion and purpose. We had a clear vision of where we were, where we were going, and what we were meant to become. There was a dream—of a meaningful career, a fulfilling life, and a journey that would make a difference. We were driven, focused, and inspired.
But somewhere along the way, something changed. We found comfort in the routine. We settled into roles that felt safe. The challenges faded, the goals grew quiet, and that initial fire began to dim. We didn’t quit—we just stayed. We stayed where it was easy. Familiar. Predictable.

This talk is a wake-up call. A call to reflect on the dream you had when you first put on that uniform. A challenge to recognize the difference between stability and stagnation. And most of all, an invitation to reignite the purpose that brought you here in the first place.

What will it take to shake off the complacency and step back into the trajectory you once envisioned? Let’s explore how to move from comfort to courage—how to realign with your dream, reclaim your passion, and step forward into the life and career you were always meant to build.

Nursing Education Then & Now: The evolution of the Modern Nursing Student

Medical Worker

Two decades ago, nursing education looked very different. Students came to class, listened to their instructors, took notes, studied their textbooks, and learned what they needed to know—right there in the classroom. Faculty were the central source of knowledge, and the classroom was the heart of learning.

But today’s nursing student lives in a vastly different world. Textbooks have become virtual accessories. Classrooms have transformed into online platforms. Many students attend just a handful of sessions, if any, in person. The instructor is no longer the sole provider of information but rather a guide through an ocean of resources. What’s covered in class now makes up just 10% of the learning required to succeed.

This talk explores the shift in nursing education and the active role today’s students must take in their academic journey. We'll discuss how traditional learning has evolved—and why clinging to the old model can lead to frustration and disappointment. Today’s student must be engaged, self-motivated, and resourceful.

From online libraries and eBooks to PowerPoints, practice labs, tutoring sessions, YouTube channels, Quizlet decks, and even educational TikToks—students now have access to a wide range of tools tailored to diverse learning styles. Though not all platforms are created equal, the intentional use of multiple resources empowers students to learn in the way that works best for them.

This talk encourages faculty and students alike to embrace the evolution of
education—recognizing that while the delivery has changed, the passion for learning and the pursuit of excellence in nursing must remain the same.

From Cap and Gown to Scrubs and Shift Reports:
Navigating the Transition from Student to Novice Nurse

Graduation Ceremony Portrait

Graduation day is exhilarating. You’ve made it through the lectures, the exams, the clinicals, the sleepless nights, and the group projects. You’ve earned your nursing degree, and the NCLEX is the final step between you and the profession you’ve worked so hard to join.

Then—suddenly—it happens.

You pass the NCLEX, get your license… and the real journey begins.

This talk explores the emotional and professional shift that occurs as nursing students become novice nurses. As a student, you were confident. You knew your role. You were often at the top of your game—respected, supported, and surrounded by structure. But now, with a license in hand, you quickly realize: this isn’t the finish line—it’s just the starting block.

You’ve earned a “license to learn,” and there is still so much you don’t know. You go from the top of the student hierarchy to the very bottom of the professional one. The stories you’ve heard—about nurse bullying, unkind physicians, overwhelming assignments—can suddenly feel very real. And if you're lucky, you’ll have a good preceptor to guide you, mentor you, and remind you that you can do this.

But what if you don’t?

This session dives into the practical, intellectual, and emotional tools needed to bridge the gap between graduation and confidence. How can you avoid the identity shock of moving from expert student to novice professional? How can you build resilience, seek support, and continue learning without fear or shame?

We’ll explore strategies for self-awareness, emotional regulation, professional growth, and building a healthy support network. Because becoming a great nurse isn’t about knowing it all—it’s about knowing how to keep growing.

Whether you're a new nurse, a faculty member preparing students, or a preceptor ready to mentor, this talk offers insight into one of the most critical transitions in a nurse’s journey—and how to do it with courage, grace, and grit.
